Focus on TOEFL

(B2) Upper-Intermediate, Code: 21356
Exercises: 678 / 120 Hours

Introduction

Focus on TOEFL is an online course, designed for students who are thinking of taking the TOEFL exam. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English, and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students.

Course aims

  • To take students from CEFR B2 up to C1.
  • To give students information about, coaching in and practice in all areas of the TOEFL exam, to enable them to be fully prepared when it comes to them taking the test.
  • The course blends grammatical structures necessary for this level, with vocabulary, including collocations, phrasal verbs and idioms, spelling, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Grammar

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • use present, past and future tenses accurately in the simple and continuous forms
  • be proficient in the use of perfect tenses, in the simple and continuous forms
  • use conditionals to talk about real and unreal situations, in present, past, and future situations
  • report what people said, using correct verb forms and correctly used reporting verbs
  • talk about actions and states using active and passive forms appropriately
  • use modal verbs appropriately to perform a variety to functions, and use past modals when necessary
  • use a variety of linking words and phrases to express ideas such as addition, contrast, reason and conclusion
  • use verbs in a grammatically correct way, regarding transitivity, and what forms follow them
  • compare adjectives and adverbs using more advanced comparatives and superlatives
  • talk about quantity

Vocabulary

By the end of the course students will have learnt approximately 1000 lexical items, including gradable and non-gradable adjectives and adverbs, phrasal verbs, idiomatic language and lexical sets.

Skills

By the end of the course students will have had exposure to and practice in reading and listening to a wide variety of material, both formal and informal, from a range of settings, using different registers.

Revision

Each of the 12 modules has a revision test, which gives students another chance to test themselves on the grammar and vocabulary they have learnt during the module. These tests are cumulative, which means the material learnt in each unit is tested at the end of that unit and also in subsequent revision tests, meaning the tests get longer as more material is tested each time.

Exam practice

Each module concentrates on a different area of the TOEFL exam, giving information about the exam, tips on how to answer the questions and advice about where students often make mistakes. It then tests them on that part of the exam.

Entry and exit tests

Before beginning the course, the student is invited to take an Entry test, which consists of a complete Reading Listening paper from the exam. At the end of the course, the student is invited to take another complete Reading and Listening paper and the student's result is analysed by the program, giving a percentage of improvement and predicts a grade in the actual exam they take.
