Focus on Cambridge B1 Preliminary

A comprehensive course for students at B1 level looking to take the Cambridge PET exam
(B1) Intermediate, Code: 7300
Exercises: 718 / 120 Hours

Introduction

Focus on PET is an online course, designed for students who are thinking of taking the Preliminary English Test. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English, and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students.

Course aims

  • To take students from Pre-Intermediate, CEFR A2 up to B1.
  • To give students information about, coaching in and practice in all areas of the PET exam, to enable them to be fully prepared when it comes to them taking the test.
  • The course blends grammatical structures necessary for this level, with vocabulary, including verb + preposition combinations, spelling, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Grammar

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • use present simple and present continuous verbs forms, as well as simple past with regular and irregular verbs in the affirmative, negative and interrogative forms
  • talk about future prediction and intention using will and going to, and present continuous with future reference
  • use the present perfect simple to talk about past experience and actions which began in the past and continuing in the present, along with adverbs and time references often used with the present perfect
  • identify things using there is/there are, have got, possessive adjectives and pronouns, articles and the possessive genitive
  • talk about adjectives, including using comparative and superlative forms
  • create yes/no and information questions
  • agree with someone in the affirmative and negative
  • use the modal verbs can, could, must, should, may and might
  • use adverbs of manner to describe how an action is performed
  • identify verbs that are followed by gerunds, bare infinitives and full infinitives
  • use simple connecting words
  • use basic passive verb forms
  • compare adjectives and adverbs using comparatives and superlatives
  • talk about quantity, along with countable and uncountable nouns
  • use conditional sentences to talk about possible future and impossible alternative present situations

Vocabulary

By the end of the course students will have learnt approximately 1000 lexical items, including lexical sets, dependent prepositions and simple phrasal verbs.

Skills

By the end of the course students will have had exposure to and practice in reading and hearing formal and informal English from a variety of registers contexts, descriptions, stories and opinions.

Revision

Each of the 12 modules has a revision test, which gives students another chance to test themselves on the grammar and vocabulary they have learnt during the module. These tests are cumulative, which means the material learnt in each unit is tested at the end of that unit and also in subsequent revision tests, meaning the tests get longer as more material is tested each time.

Exam practice

Each module concentrates on a different area of the PET exam, giving information about the exam, tips on how to answer the questions and advice about where students often make mistakes. It then tests them on that part of the exam.

Entry and exit tests

Before beginning the course, the student is invited to take an Entry test, which consists of a complete Reading and Writing and Listening paper from the exam. At the end of the course, the student is invited to take another complete Reading and Writing and Listening paper and the student's result is analysed by the program, giving a percentage of improvement and predicts a grade in the actual exam they take.
