Focus on CPE

A comprehensive preparation course for the Cambridge: Proficiency examination
(C2) Advanced Plus, Code: 21045
Exercises: 679 / 120 Hours

Introduction

Focus on CPE is an online course, designed for students who are thinking of taking the Cambridge Proficiency in English Test. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English, and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students.

Course aims

  • To take students from Advanced, CEFR C1 up to C2.
  • To give students information about, coaching in and practice in all areas of the CPE exam, to enable them to be fully prepared when it comes to them taking the test.
  • The course blends grammatical structures necessary for this level, with vocabulary, including simple verb + preposition combinations, spelling, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Grammar

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • manipulate word order to create subtlety of meaning, emphasis and humour.
  • use cleft sentences to deflect difficult questions and take possession of an argument.
  • use more complex passive forms and know when to use the active voice and passive voice, and use advanced passive verb forms.
  • use conditional forms to talk about future possible and future unlikely situations, alternative present situations and hypothetical past situations and their results.
  • use alternatives to If structures and explore how manipulating verb forms in conditional sentences can release a wide range of subtle meanings.
  • connect sentences using a range of conjunctions and other connecting words
  • identify transitive and intransitive verbs forms, and be accurate when following one verb form with another, which will be in the gerund or infinitive form
  • report statements and questions using difficult verb forms and complex structures
  • use past forms of modal verbs to express possibility, regret, certainty and negative certainty.
  • use present and past subjunctives to add formality to what they are saying or writing.
  • use inversion for formality or dramatic emphasis.
  • place adverbs and adverbials in their correct position within sentences.
  • use fronting and prefacing to add more variety to spoken English.

Vocabulary

By the end of the course students will have learnt approximately 800 lexical items, including collocations, phrasal verbs, idiomatic language, different English registers and lexical sets.

Skills

By the end of the course students will have had exposure to and practice in reading and hearing formal and informal English from a wide variety of registers, accents and contexts, descriptions, stories and opinions.

Revision

Each of the 12 modules has a revision test, which gives students another chance to test themselves on the grammar and vocabulary they have learnt during the module. These tests are cumulative, which means the material learnt in each unit is tested at the end of that unit and also in subsequent revision tests, meaning the tests get longer as more material is tested each time.

Exam practice

Each module concentrates on a different area of the CPE exam, giving information about the exam, tips on how to answer the questions and advice about where students often make mistakes. It then tests them on that part of the exam.

Entry and exit tests

Before beginning the course, the student is invited to take an Entry test, which consists of a complete Reading and Listening paper from the exam. At the end of the course, the student is invited to take another complete Reading and Listening paper and the student's result is analysed by the program, giving a percentage of improvement and predicts a grade in the actual exam they take.
