Focus on CAE

A comprehensive course for students at B2 level looking to take the Cambridge CAE exam
(C1) Advanced, Code: 21013
Exercises: 668 / 120 Hours

Introduction

Focus on CAE is an online course, designed for students who are thinking of taking the Cambridge Advanced exam. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English, and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students.

Course aims

  • To take students from Elementary, CEFR C1 up to C2.
  • To give students information about, coaching in and practice in all areas of the CAE exam, to enable them to be fully prepared when it comes to them taking the test.
  • The course blends grammatical structures necessary for this level, with vocabulary, spelling, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Grammar

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • talk and write confidently about the past, present and future, using a variety of verb forms. They will use the continuous and perfect aspect when the need requires, and also be able to talk about present and past habit.
  • form sentences present, past and future perfect, in simple and continuous forms.
  • use more complex passive forms and know when to use the active voice and passive voice. They will have increased their knowledge of passive verb forms. They will be able to use causatives to denote arranging to have something done.
  • use defining and non-defining relative clauses.
  • use all general conditional forms, first, second, third and mixed. Use wish structures in the present past and future.
  • identify transitive and intransitive verbs forms, and be accurate when following one verb form with another, which will be in the gerund or infinitive form
  • recognise the different ways the verb need can be used, in modal and non-modal contexts.
  • use modal verbs in both general and more subtle ways to express differences in nuance, formality and register
  • use question tags to form questions from statements
  • use articles correctly
  • use I'd rather or It's time + subject + past form to express present needs and wishes.

Vocabulary

By the end of the course students will have learnt approximately 800 lexical items, including nouns, verbs and adjectives, phrasal verbs, idiomatic language, different English registers and lexical sets.

Skills

By the end of the course students will have had exposure to and practice in reading and hearing formal and informal English from a wide variety of registers, accents and contexts, descriptions, stories and opinions.

Revision

Each of the 12 modules has a revision test, which gives students another chance to test themselves on the grammar and vocabulary they have learnt during the module. These tests are cumulative, which means the material learnt in each unit is tested at the end of that unit and also in subsequent revision tests, meaning the tests get longer as more material is tested each time.

Exam practice

Each module concentrates on a different area of the CAE exam, giving information about the exam, tips on how to answer the questions and advice about where students often make mistakes. It then tests them on that part of the exam.

Entry and exit tests

Before beginning the course, the student is invited to take an Entry test, which consists of a complete Reading and Writing and Listening paper from the exam. At the end of the course, the student is invited to take another complete Reading and Writing and Listening paper and the student's result is analysed by the program, giving a percentage of improvement and predicts a grade in the actual exam they take.
