Back to the drawing board

Explanation: What is an idiom?

Back to the beginning of your plans

"What about that weather we've been having then."

"Tell me about it"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you know that barbecue I built last week."

"What, the one made out of that expensive stone, the one you spent all week doing, the one you said was indestructible."

"Er, yeah, that one."

"Well, what happened to it."

"It blew over."

"Hmmm. Back to the drawing board for that creation then."

"I was never that keen on barbecues anyway. Pint?"

When an architect designs a house or other building, (s)he begins with a large flat piece of paper, with nothing on it, placed upon a drawing board, so the drawing board symbolises the beginning of the planning stage.
